Do you know who your five are?
I’m talking about the five people in your life who have your back (and you have theirs).
Yes, you’re smart and you’re not afraid of work. But you can’t carry the whole world on your shoulders. You need to have people you can trust to give you unbiased and caring advice, feedback, and perspective when you need it.
Attorneys, CPAs, and financial advisors serve important roles, but I’m talking about people who actually care about you and aren’t going to bill you for hours. You’ve got to have people you can go deep with, to be vulnerable and take off the layers we put on to make our lives look good from the outside. And that’s a hard thing to do, especially for guys.
But everyone, no matter how successful they may seem, has got stuff – from the past, present, or future – that brings them down.
Some things are involuntary, like health issues or external market conditions, and sometimes we make decisions that aren’t so great. But that’s just part of life. We’ve got to get over feeling like we’re supposed to look like the smartest one in the room. You shouldn’t be the smartest one in the room!
Many years ago, one of my mentors asked: “If you were to leave on, say, a six-year mission trip to Africa, who is the person you would trust to be a good steward of your investments, assets, capital base, and all of the things you’ve worked so hard for?”
Very few people in the room could answer that question. Most people said, “I don’t know if I even have that person.” That’s a big problem!
Do you know who the people are that would step in if you were missing, disabled, or even passed away, and would help take care of your loved ones and your legacy?
So where and how do you find your five?
You can find them one-by-one, or look for a mastermind group that’s well-facilitated by people with hearts and a mission beyond just making money. You’ve got to be intentional in seeking them out.
If you haven’t found those people yet, I ask you to make it a focal point and commit to it. It’s not going to happen without intention, so make it happen! Your five are the best insurance you can have in life. Identify them, spend time with them, and know each other’s hearts and missions.
To your freedom!
