For me, wealth is economic freedom – having enough capital assets to produce cash flow so that I’m okay whether a virus shuts me down, if I become hurt, disabled, or just don’t want to deal with regulations and interference from insurance companies. I don’t have to stay in a regulated industry if I have the economic freedom to adapt, shift, and choose whether I want to work. I don’t have to worry if tax rates go to the moon or the stock market crumbles – I’m invested in assets I fully understand.

It’s not easy to do. The default mode is abdicating the responsibility of building your wealth, economic freedom, and autonomy by giving it to someone to invest on Wall Street while you focus on using your technical training to trade time for dollars.

Wall Street’s great during a bull run market, but the decade of the 2020s is probably going to be one of the most volatile we’ve had in our lifetimes. Very few financial advisors, business owners, or investors are really prepared mentally or emotionally for what I think will come upon us in the next few years. If there was ever a time to proactively focus on orchestrating your cash flow and investments, it’s now.

Alternative investments aren’t as easy as playing Wall Street, but this is where the real wealth is made. Once you have the relationships and understand where the opportunities are, you’ll actually have control of your investments.

When your money’s in a stock, bond, or mutual fund, how much engagement and direct communication do you have with the CEO, board of directors, and culture of the companies you’re investing in? You’re taking whatever advice you can get from data or financial advisors, who are also separated many degrees from where your money is.

At the opposite extreme, investing in and managing a rental property is a very direct and hands-on investment.
