Disruption – Accept or Deny
There is disruption – massive changes happening at lightspeed – in virtually every industry today.
So what do we do about it?
Automation, technology, and artificial intelligence are literally changing the world as we speak.
There are two ways to look at it.
#1: We can be deniers, push back, and say “it’s not going to happen.”
#2: Or we can embrace the fact that change will always happen (faster now than at any other time in history).
Amazon, for example, has massively changed the retail space and the way Americans buy.
Many retail businesses, even stellar ones like Radio Shack, have been put out of business as a result.
Blockbuster used to be the number one place to go and rent videos – and they’re gone, too.
In the Real Estate marketplace, the traditional realtor/broker platform has been disrupted by Redfin and Zillow.
We’ve seen the massive change and commoditization of healthcare businesses.
However, you don’t have to blend in with the “Amazons” taking over the dentistry industry – though you can if you want to.
You have to decide where you want to play.
Maybe you went to school and put the time and money into becoming an expert technician, and that’s what you’ll continue to pursue.
Or you might decide to be more of a business owner.
I think it’s nuts to study one career path and think that you have to do that alone for 40 years.
You have to be in a position to rapidly pivot and evolve from one stage of life to the next.
If you are doing business (and life) the same as you did it even one year ago, you’re losing traction.
How do you keep up with new information and position yourself to do what you love in the midst of all this change?
What I do is join specific mastermind groups where I can collaborate, get feedback, and be challenged by people in different industries and positions.
I try to never be the smartest one in the room.
I always want to be near the middle or bottom third so that I can be challenged.
I want to deal with people who have gone down paths that I haven’t gone down yet.
It gives me strength and confidence to see the vision and opportunities that I wouldn’t have spotted on my own.
You’re missing a massive opportunity if you’re not collaborating in a high-level, well-facilitated group.
Start where you are: join a group and get onto a moving platform where you can determine with clarity where you want to be.
Don’t deny the disruption – it’s here and happening fast.
Jump in and decide where you want to play.
To your freedom!
