The adversity that we go through is how we learn in life.
I had an epiphany once that prompted a massive change in my life, and I wanted to share it with you all.
Some of you know my story: I was in private practice dentistry for 21 years, and my daughter (my only child) went through leukemia and epilepsy at an early age.
She needed to have a liver transplant at age 12.
All my training, all my wisdom, all my real estate, and all my money… couldn't change where she was with her health crisis.
All I could do was change me and the way I was running my life. .
Often, we think that only when we have everything “right” – like our practice generating x per year, or having x amount saved for retirement – then we will start living our life.
But the problem is, getting “it” right is never enough.
Because we never know when “it” is actually enough.
There is a fear-based factor in that we need more, more, more… because what if?
But we can’t live our lives that way.
Money by itself is necessary, but it does not serve the main purpose.
The goal is to have enough to have time to have freedom.
Freedom Founders… that’s what we are all about.
Doing what you want to do, when you want to do it, and with whom you want to do it.
So how do you get there, before it’s too late?
The problem is that society sets up this standard that we get a career and just work and work until we’re completely burned out.
If it was tough before, it’s even tougher today – there is marginalization, commoditization, the overtaking of healthcare by insurance companies, the government, corporate clinics, etc.
Being a solo practitioner in today’s market is anything but easy.
A lot of doctors are working much longer than they have to, many young doctors are saddled with extreme debt, and some are in between thinking if they just work harder and take more CE, everything will be fine.
Others think they are going to overhaul how dentistry and the healthcare system. However, you can’t change what you can’t change.
The only person that you change is YOU.
You can’t pull a rabbit out of a hat. You cannot let your life run you.
You have to decide to make a change…
When my daughter had her health crisis, she gave me the “reason why” that I needed to change my life.
I realized through the adversity that I needed to change – to stop let my life running me.
And I evaluated what I really needed in my life: getting to spend time with my daughter. Time I hadn’t spent with her for the first 12 years of her life.
My epiphany came when I was able to determine and minimize my financial number, which was what I needed in terms of passive cash flow each month. (And only what I truly needed; nothing extravagant.)
At that point, I realized what I needed to do next.
I sold my practice and made a decision to run my life instead of letting my life run me.
And best of all, my daughter survived.
I don’t regret being a dentist at all. Being a dentist gave me a stepping stone to get to the next level, which was important.
But it isn’t the end goal.
You won’t get off that treadmill until you make changes – You have to be clear about what your goals actually are and how you can get there.
No one wants to sacrifice their entire life away, and you have to start earlier rather than later.
You do deserve many things from hard work, but you are not entitled to them anymore.
If you want more these days, then you are going to have to do things differently.
Being a low-cost provider is not a winning game.
Change your lifestyle and start developing alternative wealth streams, such as real estate.
You don’t have to serve 30 patients a day; you can serve the few people who really appreciate you and need your help.
Once you start building alternative wealth on the side and keep that freedom goal number down to a reasonable level, then everything will change.
Whatever your freedom number is, that number can and will expand over time.
Being free means that you are free to let you mind expand.
You can build networks, relationships, etc.
I didn’t get what all of this meant when I was younger, but I had a few wake-up calls that set me free.
No longer trying to reach that elusive pinnacle on a mountain, and being able to be there for my daughter, was the best thing I ever did.
There is a better way, and a faster way.
But you need a blueprint, and you need access to the right people.
Once you do this, your life will change forever.
