I get involved in some of the online forums and thread discussions; you have to be careful, but there can be a lot of good information about business and practice.
The question many people have on these forums is: Do coaches, consulting programs, and mentors actually work?
Well, there are two sides to this coin. Some people say that coaches and mentors have helped them immensely, while other people don’t think they’re helpful at all.
With six decades of experience, and having used lots of coaches and mentors during my life, I’d like to weigh in.
I have noticed that there are many people out there who use coaches and mentors in their day to day life, even after they have finished school.
Especially when it comes to children, finding the right coach is vital.
Many people want their children to excel, so they get a coach for them.
I even had a tennis coach when I was a kid, because I wanted to be a great tennis player.
But, what happens when we are finished with school? Where can we continue our education in order to stay fresh and relevant in the business world?
Should we be working with coaches, mentors, and consulting programs, even after we graduate and leave college?
The truth is that coaches can teach us amazing skills, and even things that we failed to learn in school, including business practices, management skills, marketing skills, leadership skills, investments, financial accoutrements, and more.
Sadly, many of these things we never focused on in school, or never learned at all.
And, we might be asking ourselves … “I always excelled in school, why am I not excelling now?”
The answer is time.
The reason why coaches are helpful is because they help us weed through all the excess to save us time.
Time is the secret, and the right coach can help us utilize our time better.
The best coaches are effective in helping us understand what we need, since we don’t always know what it is that we actually need.
The fastest track for us getting from point A to point B is finding someone to help us with what we’re not good at.
Of course, this coach or mentor we choose must have a good track record.
We can’t just choose any coach or mentor we find on the internet … this must be a thought out intellectual process.
We are investing in ourselves and in our future.
I have noticed that joining the right mastermind group is key.
Mastermind groups are there to help us wake up, and open our eyes to see what is really important, and what we should be focusing on.
None of us are perfect, and all of us could use some assistance and clarity every now and then.
It’s also important to have a good foundation. That is vital.
The truth is that we can all benefit from coaches, mentors, consulting groups, and mastermind groups, but we need to have the right mindset.
We need to be coachable.
And we need to believe the process will work, for it to actually work.
Unfortunately, there are some people that are just not coachable. They might be very smart and work hard, but because they aren’t coachable, they will remain stuck.
The secret to success is to find the best coach, mentor, consulting group, or mastermind group, and then stick to it no matter what.
