What is an education worth today?
It depends on the kind of education, and the desired outcome.
Formal education means going through grade school, high school, college or upper education, graduate school, and perhaps professional school.
That's the education I went through. I have nothing negative to say about it, except that it’s the traditional path – and it may not be right for everybody.
If I had to do it over again, I would do it differently.
With the astronomical cost, the time commitment, and the debt required, one can question whether or not it’s a good investment.
If you can make that assessment and determine it’s worth it, then more power to you.
But for me today, I don’t think it’s worth it.
What happens after we finish our formal education? Do we reach a point where we all of a sudden don’t need to know any more, or invest in ourselves further?
Once you finish your formal education, even if it’s just high school, the education beyond that point becomes even more paramount.
That’s when you’re learning what’s really important: Where do you go to get what you really need in life?
There's the basic education that we all need: reading, writing, arithmetic. But beyond that, where are your best opportunities?
What do you love? What do you have a passion for? How do you figure that out?
You have to be around other people who think like you do, who may have taken an alternative pathway that isn’t based on higher education.
Maybe some, yes, but others no.
I know plenty of people who are doing great in life because they're resourceful, and they figured out how to get the information they needed through their own connections.
Maybe it's an apprenticeship or mentorship, or just surrounding themselves with the right people.
But they take that knowledge and combine it with their own wisdom, to find the opportunity in the marketplace and solve problems.
That's what people do. That's what businesses are built on: Solving problems for other people.
I don't think traditional education today prepares people for that at all.
They give them advanced degrees in all kinds of subjects that have no merit, and don’t give them a basis for creating an entrepreneurial lifestyle.
An entrepreneurial lifestyle for me is a freedom lifestyle: doing what I want to do, with whom I want to do it, when I want to do it.
That's where I think education needs to be today.
Perhaps you've gone down that path. You've done all the formal education, you're in a career path or professional practice, and you're still wondering: Is this all there is?
I'm going to tell you: It’s not all there is.
But you have to surround yourself with the right people to figure out what that next step is for you.
If you just stay with your head down, working hard, cranking it out on the hamster wheel, that's pretty much where your life is going to stay.
I'm not against that work ethic, but you're not leveraging the real opportunities.
Your brain power, your ability to leverage other people's ideas, processes, skills, and time – all those things are available out there, if you'll get outside the box.

That's where my education comes from today.
That's what helps me stay ahead, and to find the opportunities in the marketplace to solve other people's problems.
It’s the key to living life the way you want to, and not a life based on someone else's agenda.
